It’s senior portrait season! What are some of the most important elements of a senior portrait session? In no particular order: posing, clothing and accessories, lighting, hair/makeup, and confidence! Let’s break those down…

Posing

One of the most frequently asked questions we get from seniors is: “Do I have to know how to pose?” The answer is no! Our small and creative photography crew goes through extensive portrait photography training, has photographed thousands of high school seniors, and knows exactly how to pose you to flatter your particular body type and facial features. Our seniors are relieved when they know that they don’t have to come up with their own poses.

Clothing + Accessories

Choose colors, fabrics, and fits that enhance your favorite physical features. Most importantly, choose clothing that you feel good and yourself in! (Tip: We recommend basic colors, but also find a color that makes your eyes and/or face pop!) Check out our FAQ/What to Wear Guide for more clothing tips!

Hair/Makeup

We highly recommend getting your hair and/or makeup done for your senior portraits. A haircut is a good idea before your senior session… just not the day before! If it’s possible, cut your hair at least 1-2 weeks before your senior session. If you want to wear makeup, look on Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration, and show a makeup artist what you have in mind.

Lighting

Whether you’re getting your portraits taken at our studio, outside, or on-location, our photographers and assistants use their knowledge, creativity, years of experience, and equipment to properly light your face, body, and environment. Lighting is extremely important, and we take pride in our expertise.

Confidence

Last but not least, confidence! Confidence is a two-way street… photographers AND those they are photographing need confidence for a great photoshoot. You can be confident knowing that you are in good hands at Focal Point Studio. Our portrait photographers have had the honor of teaching thousands of portrait photographers at national photography conferences and workshops, and have had their images featured by several senior portrait magazines and Instagram accounts. We are confident in our portrait photography skills and hope that you can be comfortable, confident, and yourself at your portrait session! We want you to have fun, relax, and have an amazing experience with us.
